Unmanaged business connectivity create  ssecurity risk because the employer may not know which network service, supplier, device configuration or support process is being used. The main risks are not inherent to eSIM; they arise when employees select connectivity without supplier assurance, policy, visibility or incident response.

An eSIM can be a secure and practical technology. The GSMA describes eSIM as securely downloading a SIM profile into an embedded secure element. The enterprise risk sits around procurement and use: who supplied the profile, what information was shared, whether the device was configured correctly and what happens when something goes wrong.

Seven hidden risks

1. Unreviewed suppliers

Employees may accept terms and privacy practices on behalf of themselves without understanding whether the provider is appropriate for business use. The employer may have no contract, escalation orassurance route.

2. Reliance on public Wi-Fi

When roaming is expensive or difficult, travellers may default to cafés, airports and hotels. Even where traffic is encrypted, untrusted networks increase exposure to fake access points, tracking and user error.

3. Incorrect dual-SIM configuration

A traveller can install an eSIM correctly but leave the primary line available for data switching or roaming. The result can be unexpected cost and confusion about which connection is active.

4. Loss of incident visibility

If IT does not know which service is in use, support and investigation take longer. A lost device, suspicious connection or blocked service needs a known escalation path.

5. Inconsistent geographic routing

Some travel connectivity services route traffic through another country. This can affect application access, fraud controls, performance or data-governance assessments. It should be understood during supplier review.

6. Unsupported devices and stale software

Travellers may use personal, older or non-compliant devices because they support a convenient connectivity option. Connectivity approval must remain linked to device-management policy.

7. Fragmented business records

Receipts, account credentials and usage histories may remain in personal email accounts or apps. That weakens auditability and makes off boarding harder.

In practice, cost and security are connected. When an approved option is too expensive or difficult, employees seek workarounds. A policy that ignores traveller experience can unintentionally increase risky behaviour.

The SECURE supplier and process check

·      Supplier: has procurement completed appropriate due diligence?

·      Encryption and device: are device, VPN and authentication requirements clear?

·      Configuration: can users activate without exposing the primary line to roaming?

·      Usage visibility: can the business see allocation, status and exceptions?

·      Response: is there a tested support and incident route?

·      Exit: can accounts, plans and records be managed when circumstances change?

Security checklist for travelling employees

·      Use a company-managed device where required

·      Install operating-system and application updates before travel

·      Enable screen lock and multi-factor authentication

·      Obtain connectivity through the approved process

·      Confirm which SIM is selected for mobile data

·      Disable unintended mobile-data switching

·      Follow company VPN guidance

·      Avoid unknown charging cables and access points

·      Report loss or suspicious behaviour immediately

·      Remove or archive travel profiles according to policy

Security controls should be proportionate to the organisation, destination and information handled. Roaming Intelligence can assess these dependencies through its Connectivity Health Check and help create a governed delivery model through Enterprise eSIM Management.

Nextstep

Ask IT to list every travel connectivity supplier used by employees in the last quarter. Then ask procurement whethereach has been reviewed. The difference between those lists is your immediategovernance gap. To assess it independently, contact Roaming Intelligence.
